Panel participation: "Alternative Futures in a Heating World: Visions and Vision Work of Climate Movements"
What does a fossil-free, just future actually look like? While climate science clearly outlines what we must avoid, defining the path forward often falls to grassroots social movements.
The CEU Shattuck Center for Human Rights hosted last week, 25 June, a research seminar and workshop titled "Alternative Futures in a Heating World: Visions and Vision Work of Climate Movements". Our RETOOL partner Aron Buzogany by BOKU University of Vienna, served as the expert commentator on the panel. of the workshop "Alternative Futures in a Heating World: Visions and Vision Work of Climate Movements"
The research introduces a dynamic approach to understanding "vision and vision work" within social movements. Rather than treating a movement’s goals as static ideas, the project dives into the creative, complex, and sometimes challenging processes through which these futures are imagined, articulated, and brought to life.
The core question driving the discussion: How can the vision work of the climate movement help societies finally break free from carbon lock-in?
Chaired by Felix Butzlaff (CEU Shattuck Center for Human Rights), the workshop sparked a vibrant debate. As a commentator, Aron Buzogany helped unpack these findings, bridging the gap between movement dynamics and broader political realities.
The complete analysis and findings can be found in the authors' newly released book, available now via De Gruyter.
